These microscope pictures are taken  from the book ‘ Microcosmos’, created by Brandon Brill . This book includes many scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of insects, human body parts and household items.
These are the most amazing images of what is too small to see with the naked eye.

04 – The surface of a strawberry

05 – Bacteria on the surface of a human tongue

06 – Human sperm (spermatozoa), the male sex cells

07 – The nylon hooks and loops of velcro

08 – Household dust which includes long hairs such as cat fur, twisted synthetic and woolen fibers, serrated insect scales, a pollen grain, plant and insect remains

09 -The weave of a nylon stocking

10 – The end of the tongue (proboscis) of a hummingbird hawkmoth

11 – The head of a mosquito

12 – A human head louse clinging to a hair

13 – The eight eyes (two groups of four) on the head of a Mexican red-kneed tarantula

14 – Cut hairs and shaving foam between two razor blades

15 – Cigarette paper

16 – The corroded surface of a rusty metal nail

  • Brodrik

I’m amazed by the similarity in the texture of The head of a mosquito and The surface of an Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory silicon microchip. Thanks for the post

I hated the ‘bacteria on tongue’ thing..

  • Larry Vashon

Superb work. I remember when it was only black and white. The color really sets it off. Interesting that a whole little micro world exists on us and everything around us. The tongue is like already addressed pretty freaky. I’m goin’ to gargle

I want to throw up. But in a good way.

    @ Jmor

There is a difference between micro, macro, AND close-up photography.

Micro photography must be taken through a microscopic lens, whereas macro photography is taken through a macro lens. Good luck getting these results through a macro lens, because it isn’t going to happen.

Close-up photography is taken through a normal lens, just positioned close to the subject. It doesn’t show anywhere near the detail a macro or micro lens would.

  • Richard A. Alexander

Are the colors natural or added in/enhanced? Beautiful and fascinating photos either way.

  • Chris Fisher

These are mostly all scanning electron micrographs (SEMs) and are really, usually in B&W–the color is pseudo-color and therefore misleading–these colors do not really reflect nature.

you should see how my tong looks like on the microscope when I see a Republican…

  • ahsiang

some of them are really scary

Totally scarred for life, and will cower in fear from every ant and bacteria I see or hear about, but these are awesome, if a little creepy.

Just want to say your article is as amazing. The clearness in your post is just excellent and i can assume you are an expert on this subject. Fine with your permission let me to grab your RSS feed to keep updated with forthcoming post. Thanks a million and please keep up the rewarding work.

  • Russ Miller

I agree with Chris Fischer – the colors must have been added. Electron Microscope pictures are greyscale, because the beam of electrons doesn’t reflect differently based on the color of the target, and there’s no color data in the electron beam. Very beutiful enhansements, though.

  • Lauren

who else will never look at a strawberry the same way again?

  • Glazemoo

Very Impressive collection. Best collection I have seen so far in February. I love Macro Photography…

really captivating collection! There’s something very compelling about peering into the microscope and seeing th world of the tiny up close. the chemical shards on the cigarette paper seem really sinister!

  • jagz

wooww… its little bit weird and interesting fact of the life..

  • Jim Jackman

I took the original SEM micrograph of an ant holding an IC in it’s mandibles around 1980 on a Philips SEM 501 in Eindhoven and had to suffer many crazy comments including “cruelty to animals” , and a April 1st story that Philips were using the ants as non union labour to assemble IC’s. I must say that it was a better quality micrograph than yours, sharper, better depth of field, just not pseudo coloured
The micrograph appeared in many publications including National Geographjc and Nature as well as a text book on marketing.
